about
Lean Year recorded “Panes” over the course of two sessions at label-mate Erik Hall’s rural Michigan studio, with Hall (whose recent rendition of Steve Reich’s Music For 18 Musicians revisited the seminal work to great effect) engineering and playing bass, and Elephant Micah's Matt O'Connell contributing drums. The song was produced by Alverson and Hall. The first session took place in the seeming stability of late fall 2019, the second in the early spring of 2020 as daily life in the U.S. unraveled into self-isolation. The single reflects the tension between these two seasons: ostensible security and a deep fragility that’s always present, yet easily ignored.
In 2017 Lean Year released their self-titled debut which garnered acclaim from NPR, Pitchfork, Stereogum, WNYC and more. Since then, the album’s lead single “Come and See” was prominently featured on HBO’s The New Pope and the duo contributed an original song, “We/Me” for Radiolab's The Most Perfect Album. Alverson (well known for his cult-drama, The Comedy) saw the release of his latest film The Mountain, which premiered in competition at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, and Rex continued her work as an international consultant focused on resilience in complex systems. The two have toured selectively, and are hard at work on a new record which will see its release later this year.
